What CAUSES a Hangover? Congeners Congeners are the by-products of alcohol fermentation, as well as some types of additives to some alcohol beverages. While some congeners, such as zinc, are added to improve flavors and more, others are just the by-products left behind in red wine and darker drinks (i.e. bourbon, some tequilas, and brandy) as well as cheaply made alcohols. If you’ve ever wondered why you got sick after a night of shots of the cheap tequila as opposed to the clearer and more expensive tequila which gave you no hangover…then consider this a good answer. Congeners will exaggerate your hangover symptoms. So, if you are consuming the ‘suspected’ congener-laden alcoholic beverages, then try to use more preventative measures such as plenty of water in order to help alleviate some of the effects of the potential hangover which can be experienced.
