What CAUSES a Hangover? Too much too fast (or binge drinking) When a person drinks too much alcohol too fast, the level of alcohol that needs to be metabolizes obviously increases. Drinking too much alcohol too fast can not only cause more stress on your body’s ability to metabolize the ethanol quickly enough, but it can also lead to major problems such as alcohol poisoning, also referred to as acute alcohol intoxication. Your body requires time in order to metabolize and process all the alcohol that is running through a person’s body. The substances such as glutathione, which is a vital part of the breaking down of acetaldehyde (toxic by-product of alcohol metabolism), experience lower levels as they are deleting their own sources trying to keep up with the responsibilities of attacking the acetaldehyde. See Metabolism by-products (acetaldehyde) for more info) When a person drinks too much in a short period, or binges, the blood alcohol levels will skyrocket. This huge increase in blood alcohol levels can cause fatal consequences due to the slowing of the drinker’s blood pressure, heart rate and breathing as well as literally putting the brain to ‘sleep’ causing the person to pass out and no longer be able to sustain themselves which in many cases has led to fatalities.
