Alcohol and Your Health How Alcohol Affects Your Other Systems Kidney stones Research has shown that moderate consumption of alcohol decreases the risk of kidney stones substantially. Alcohol is not the only element that can help decrease the risk of kidney stone, but vitamin C and coffee have also shown positive effects on the risks of developing kidney stones. http://aje.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/143/5/487 Diabetes According to recent studies, alcohol has contributed to a decreased risk of diabetes when drinks are consumed moderately. ‘Moderate’ being about 2 drinks per day. The reason for such conclusions would be due to how alcohol affects our insulin levels. Alcohol causes insulin to become much more sensitive, therefore helping prevent type 2 diabetes versus those who drank very little or none at all. Heavy drinkers, however, actually increase their risk of diabetes as well as a host of other potential diseases and conditions. http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/287/19/2559 Arthritis/Osteoporosis Studies have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol decreases the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis as well as osteoporosis in many individuals. The increased prevention to such conditions is due to the bone mineral density (BMD) which is found at much higher levels in those who consume moderate amounts of alcohol daily versus those who do not.
